At Kenowa Hills, we believe technology is an important part of curriculum for our learners. Student devices such as Chromebooks are a tool for learning, just like chalkboards, textbooks, encyclopedias, and filmstrips were a learning tool for many of us. These devices enable our teachers to enhance lessons and concepts by doing things like recording lectures to allow students to watch as many times as they like to secure the understanding of the concept or topic. Our educators also use these tools to supplement and enhance classroom lessons by providing students the use of a multitude of software programs (apps), curated by our education professionals and our curriculum department to help students better understand things like multiplication, plate tectonics, and the alphabet to name a few.
Students also use these tools for communication. They pose questions to their teachers in and out of the classroom using email, class chat, Canvas (our new Learning Management Software) and various other digital communication channels. Students showcase their work to local and global audiences by sharing writing assignments with students in other countries and across our country using digital pen pals. Students use devices to communicate by collaborating on school tasks with other students in and out of the classroom, with geography no longer being a limiting factor.
At Kenowa Hills, we also use technology to help diversify the learning experience for our students. Professional educators use technology to offer alternative submission possibilities on assignments for students, choosing from options like submitting a video, audio recordings, animation, or a written piece all for the same assignment. Not only can this be done for submission of assignments, but also for delivery of lessons. Websites can be referenced for students to get alternate explanations for ideas and concepts presented in class. The possibilities of diversifying and individualizing the learning process seem endless as we discover more every day.
These examples reflect our vision for the use of technology in our curriculum at Kenowa Hills: that student learning takes place anytime, anywhere with no boundaries. Our students use technology to elevate their learning on a daily basis, practice being exemplary digital citizens, and demonstrate their competency in our learning standards.
